The Burgenland Croats descend from the Croatian settlers who came
in the 16th century. Today they live in the Burgenland from the
north to the south, from Kittsee to Reinersdorf. It has been difficult
to establish the number of the Burgenland Croats precisely. The
estimated number living in Austria, Hungary and Slovakia is about
60.000, most of them living in the Burgenland. Three different Croatian
dialects are spoken in the area, but since the turn of the century
a Burgenland Croatian standard language has been developed. For
more than 450 years the Croats have preserved their wide-ranging
and rich culture.
The Burgenland Croats are completely integrated in public life.
Their oldest, bestknown and biggest organization is the Croatian
Cultural Assocaiton of the Burgenland. Since 1929 this organization
has represented the intrests of the Burgenland Croats in Austria
and on international levels.
The Croatian Cultural Association/ HKD of the Burgenland, with
its seat in Eisenstadt, is democratically organized and has got
a subgroup in almost every village of the Burgenland. The aims of
the organization are to organize the minority´s life and to preserve
its identity, language and extraordinary culture.
The Croatian Cultural Association of the Burgenland is convinced
of the fact that the Burgenland-Croatian ethnic group enriches the
country. This region is nowadays more than ever before standing
in the centre of interests in the Central European cultural scenery.
